In short

An education loan is a personal loan you use to pay for study that government schemes don’t cover — short courses, bootcamps, trade tickets, licences, professional certifications and private college fees, plus the laptop and tools you’ll need. You repay it in fixed instalments while you get on with learning. Loan Finder Store searches 60+ lenders and funders to find education loans that fit your budget.

  • Made for career upgrades

Fund the qualification that opens the next door, from a forklift ticket to a project management course.

  • Kit included

Roll the laptop, software, textbooks or trade tools into the same loan as your course fees.

  • No credit score hit

Enquiring with us won’t affect your credit score. A lender only checks once you choose to apply.

  • From enquiry to enrolment

Tell us about the course once. We search 60+ lenders and funders and stay with you through to settlement.

What your study loan can cover

  • Short courses

  • Builder’s licence courses

  • Drone pilot licences
  • Forklift & high-risk work tickets
  • Professional certifications
  • Private college fees
  • Flight training

  • Trade tools & safety gear
  • Exam & registration fees

Can I get a loan for a course?

Yes. Education loans are usually unsecured personal loans, so you don’t need to put up an asset, and the money can go towards almost any genuine course or training cost. Lenders mainly want to see that repayments fit your budget while you study.

Course finance suits people who know where they’re headed and don’t want to wait. A few examples:

  • The office worker going digital. A part-time UX bootcamp paid upfront, plus a laptop that can run the software.
  • The carpenter going out on their own. A builder’s licence course and registration fees — the step before quoting jobs under their own name.
  • The warehouse supervisor moving up. A heavy rigid truck licence that opens the door to driving roles.

If the plan is to launch a business once you’re qualified, our start-up business loans page covers what comes next.

Is a personal loan better than VET Student Loans or HECS?

Not always — check government help first. HECS-HELP covers eligible university places, and VET Student Loans help eligible students pay tuition for approved diploma-level and above VET courses. If your course qualifies, start there.

The gaps are where a personal loan for education earns its keep. Short courses, many private courses and study costs sit outside those schemes.

What courses can I finance with education loans?

Most legitimate, paid training can be financed, as long as there’s a clear cost on a quote or invoice.

  • Trade tickets and licences: builder’s licence courses, high-risk work tickets and truck licence upgrades.
  • Tech and creative: coding, cyber security, UX, digital marketing and design bootcamps.
  • Professional certifications: project management, bookkeeping, fitness and coaching qualifications.
  • Aviation and drones: flight training hours, or a remote pilot licence for commercial drone work.
  • Private college fees: courses outside the government loan schemes, paid upfront or by term.
  • Study overseas: tuition, flights and set-up costs for a course or semester abroad.

Can I finance a trade course or licence?

Yes, and it’s one of the clearest cases for course finance. A licence can be the difference between working for someone else and quoting your own jobs.

Trade training often comes with costs beyond the course itself. Add up the whole picture before you borrow:

  • Course and assessment fees
  • Licence application and registration fees
  • Tools, PPE and safety gear
  • Travel and accommodation for practical assessments

How does course finance work with Loan Finder Store?

  1. 1

    Tell us about the course

Share the provider, the cost and any extras like tools or a laptop. Our form takes about 2 minutes to fill in.

FAQs

Education & course loans: your questions answered

Can I get a student loan for a short course?

Usually not through government schemes, but a personal loan can cover it. HECS-HELP and VET Student Loans are built for eligible university places and approved diploma-level and above VET courses, so short courses, bootcamps and many private courses fall outside them. An education loan fills that gap and can cover extras too.

Can I finance a laptop and tools for study?

Yes. You can include a laptop, software, textbooks or trade tools in the same loan as your course fees, as long as the total is realistic for your budget. List everything in your enquiry so one loan covers the lot, instead of the extras landing on a credit card.

Can I use a loan to study overseas?

Yes, a personal loan can cover tuition, flights and set-up costs for a course or semester abroad. The big question lenders ask is how you’ll keep up repayments while you’re away, so your income during the study period matters. Tell us your plans and dates, and we’ll look for lenders comfortable with your situation.

Can I claim my course fees on tax?

Sometimes. As a general principle, self-education costs may be deductible when the course is directly connected to the work you do now, while study aimed at a brand-new career generally isn’t. There are conditions, so check with your accountant or the ATO before counting on a deduction.

Will an education loan enquiry affect my credit score?

No. Your enquiry with Loan Finder Store leaves your credit score alone. A lender only runs a credit check once you choose to apply, and we’ll let you know before that happens. Checking your own credit report doesn’t hurt it either, and you can get a copy free from the credit reporting bodies.

Can the loan be paid directly to my course provider?

It depends on the lender. Some pay the funds into your bank account so you can pay the provider yourself, while others can pay an invoice directly. Either way, read the provider’s refund policy before you pay, in case your plans change.

What if I’m studying part-time while working?

That’s a common set-up, and it often helps your application. Lenders look at the income you’ll have while studying, so steady work makes repayments easier to show. If you plan to cut back your hours, tell us upfront and we’ll size the loan around what you’ll actually earn.

General information only — it doesn’t take into account your personal circumstances. Credit is subject to lender approval, terms and fees.
