How can I speed up a loan application?
The quickest applications aren’t always the ones with a spotless credit file. They’re the ones where nothing is missing. If you’re working out how to get a loan approved fast, start with preparation, not the submit button.
Every gap triggers a follow-up: a missing payslip, an unexplained transfer, a debt that wasn’t listed. Each one adds another round of emails, so close those gaps before you start.
- 1
Gather everything first
Use the checklist on this page and save it all in one folder on your phone or laptop.
- 2
Know your numbers
Have a realistic figure for monthly spending, not a guess. Lenders will compare it with your statements.
- 3
Declare every debt
Include credit cards you rarely use, buy now pay later accounts and any loans you’ve co-signed for someone else.
- 4
Have the purpose sorted
A quote, invoice or contract of sale shows the lender exactly what they’re funding.
- 5
Stay reachable
Reply to calls and emails the same day where you can. A day’s delay on your side is a day’s delay on the loan.
What documents do I need for a personal loan?
Most lenders want to confirm four things: who you are, what you earn, what you spend and what you owe. Here’s what usually covers it for a standard personal loan.
| What they’re checking | What usually covers it | Quick tip |
|---|---|---|
| Identity | Driver licence, passport or Medicare card | Make sure nothing has expired |
| Income (PAYG) | Recent payslips, sometimes an employment letter | Payslips showing year-to-date earnings help |
| Income (self-employed) | Tax returns, notices of assessment, BAS | Lodge overdue returns first if you can |
| Spending | Bank statements, usually the last few months | Digital sharing is often quickest |
| Existing debts | Statements for cards, loans and BNPL | List limits, not just balances |
| Housing costs | Lease, rent ledger or mortgage statement | Shows your biggest regular expense |
| The purpose | Quote, invoice or contract of sale | Match the loan amount to the quote |
Buying a vehicle? Add the VIN, rego and seller details. Borrowing for a wedding, surgery or a trip, the quote or booking confirmation does the same job.
What do lenders look at?
Lenders are answering one question: can you comfortably afford this loan and keep up the repayments? To get there, they weigh hard numbers and track record.
- Income stability: your time in the current role or business, and whether pay arrives like clockwork.
- Living expenses: what your bank statements show you actually spend.
- Existing commitments: every loan, card limit and buy now pay later account. Since 10 June 2025, BNPL has been regulated as credit, and lenders will count it too.
- Credit history: your repayment record, any defaults and recent enquiries.
- The loan itself: the amount, the term and, for secured loans, the asset.
Curious how your credit file fits in? How credit scores affect loan applications walks through it.
What is payslip vs bank statement verification?
They’re two ways a lender confirms your finances. Payslip verification shows what your employer says you earn, while bank statement verification shows what actually lands in your account and where it goes.
Many lenders use both. Payslips prove your salary, and statements reveal your real spending, your rent or mortgage and any debts a payslip wouldn’t show.
Can self-employed people get fast approval?
Yes, self-employed borrowers can move quickly too. The preparation just looks different: instead of payslips, lenders want proof that your business income is real and reasonably steady.
- Your ABN, and how long it’s been active
- Your most recent tax returns and notices of assessment
- Recent BAS statements, if you’re registered for GST
- Business bank statements alongside your personal ones
- An accountant’s letter, if your returns are running behind
If your tax returns are out of date, some lenders offer low-doc options that rely on BAS or bank statements instead. Self-employed, contract and casual workers are all welcome; we consider the full picture.
How long does loan approval take?
It depends on the lender, the loan type and how complete your application is. A tidy application can move through quickly, while one that’s missing documents can sit waiting for days.
Once a loan is approved, many lenders can settle quickly — sometimes within 24 hours, depending on the lender. Secured loans can take a little longer because the vehicle or asset also needs checking. You can see each stage on our How it works page.
